There’s nothing like Southern hospitality, and Savannah, GA knows all about it. Known as the “Hostess City of the South,” this historical riverfront hotspot is Georgia’s first city. Practically bursting with history, Savannah shows off its origins with monuments, historic mansions and forts, and the city’s historic district offers 24 squares of entertainment and gorgeous architecture.
Savannah Walks explores the city through various themed walks; learn about the area’s fascinating and sometimes controversial past in the Savannah Stroll, or focus specifically on its war history with the Civil War Walk. Like every good Southern city, Savannah has its share of hauntings and legends, which tourists can learn about in the Ghost Walk. Tourists can discover the history of the building of the railroad system in the 1830s at the Central of Georgia Railroad, where they can stop by a blacksmith shop, walk through a cotton yard and check out a depot that played its part in first connecting the Southern states.
The beautiful Savannah River provides a flourishing waterfront business, with markets, art and unique shops lining the edge of the city. The triple-decker, red, white and blue River Street Riverboat leads up to 600 passengers around the river on a narrated, sightseeing cruise, dinner entertainment cruise, Monday night gospel entertainment cruise or Thursday Murder-a-float cruise. Visit River Street Sweets for a tasty Southern treat; nibble on warm pralines, chocolate bear claws, glazed pecans, peanut brittle or turtles while enjoying the scenic waterfront and lively cobble-stoned streets.
If the south does anything better than hospitality, it’s food. Corleone’s Restaurant takes advantage of the Savannah River’s plentiful resources; try their spicy garlic shrimp, mussels or shrimp scampi for a reasonably priced, mouth-watering dinner. The riverfront is dotted with cafes, seafood restaurants and gelato places, so the options are endless.
Savannah also presents many opportunities for art lovers. The Telfair Museum of Art is one of the south’s first public museums and contains three buildings, two of which are National Historic Landmarks. Architectural historians rave about the museum’s Owens-Thomas House, which is considered an incredible piece of English Regency architecture, and the 64,000-sq.-ft. Jepson Center for the Arts features a significant collection of 20th- and 21st-century art, American and Impressionist paintings and the famous Bird Girl statue portrayed on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good an Evil. V&J Duncan Antique Maps and Books, one of Savannah’s many quaint and interesting shops, is situated in the city’s Monterey Square and displays within it a large collection of photographs, old books, mezzotints, lithographs, old engravings and prints of thousands of portraits.
Tybee Island and Hutchinson Island are only a ferry ride away and provide Summer travelers with beaches and resorts. The Savannah Civic Center hosts more than 900 events per year, so there’s always something happening no matter what time of year you plan your trip. From the food to the friendly atmosphere, Savannah is comforting and charming in every way and is sure to keep visitors entertained and satisfied.
